ScanGear (Scanner Driver) Error Messages

If an error message for ScanGear (scanner driver) appears, check the error code and follow the corresponding solution.

Error in scanner.
Turn off scanner and follow instructions in User's Guide.
Scanner driver will be closed.
  • Make sure that your scanner or printer and the computer are connected correctly.
  • Delete MP Drivers, then reinstall MP Drivers from the Setup CD-ROM or the web page.

    Refer to "Deleting the Unnecessary MP Drivers" for your model from Home of the Online Manual for how to delete MP Drivers.

  • Your scanner or printer may be damaged.

    Restart the computer, then reconnect your scanner. If the same error message still appears, contact the service center.

140 Printer is in use or an error has occurred. Check status.
Scanner driver will be closed.
  • If you are attempting to SCAN while the printer is performing another operation (for example, printing), please wait for that operation to finish before attempting to SCAN.
  • If you are attempting to SCAN while a support code is displayed by the printer, you must address and resolve that support code before you can continue to SCAN. For example, a 1640 support code signifies that the printer has detected that the remaining ink in one or more of the ink tanks may have reached the lower limit line shown on the ink tank, and you must follow the instructions to resolve the 1640 support code to continue to SCAN.
  • Please follow the instructions on the page entitled An Error Occurs to address and resolve the particular support code displayed by the printer.
145 Cannot communicate with scanner for these reasons:
- Scanner is turned off.
- Scanner is disconnected.
(It is disconnected from LAN, if using on LAN.)

Please check and try again.
Scanner driver will be closed.
  • Make sure that your scanner or printer is turned on.
  • Delete MP Drivers, then reinstall MP Drivers from the Setup CD-ROM or the web page.

    Refer to "Deleting the Unnecessary MP Drivers" for your model from Home of the Online Manual for how to delete MP Drivers.

  • Make sure that the selected application source is correct. Refer to the application's manual for details.
  • Check the printer status.
  • With USB connection, check the connection of the USB cable and reconnect as required.
  • With network connection, check the connection status and reconnect as required.
  • With network connection, specify the scanner to use with IJ Network Scanner Selector EX.

155 Cannot communicate with scanner.
Cable may be disconnected or scanner may be turned off.
Check status.
Scanner driver will be closed.
156 Cannot communicate with scanner for these reasons:
- Scanner is turned off.
- USB cable is disconnected.

Please check and try again.
Scanner driver will be closed.
157 Cannot communicate with scanner for these reasons:
- Scanner is turned off.
- (If using Wired LAN connection) It is disconnected from Wired LAN.
- (If using wireless LAN connection) Signal strength is poor due to obstructions.
- Network connection is prohibited by security software.
- Different scanner on the network is selected.

Please check and try again.
Click [Scanner Selection] if you want to select another scanner.
Scanner driver will be closed.
152 Running out of memory.
Increase available memory.
Scanner driver will be closed.
  • The memory required to start ScanGear (scanner driver) cannot be obtained; exit other applications.
201 A required file is missing or corrupted, or settings are incorrect.
Try the installation again.

  • Delete MP Drivers, then reinstall MP Drivers from the Setup CD-ROM or the web page.

202 An internal error has occurred.
Scanner driver will be closed. Take the following measures.
- Check the scanner status.
- Restart the scanner.
- Restart the computer, then try again.
- Reinstall the scanner driver.

    • Reinstall MP Drivers.
  • Follow the procedure below to check if WIA (Windows Image Acquisition) is running or in started state.

    Windows 10/Windows 8.1/Windows 8/Windows 7/Windows Vista:

    Click Control Panel > System and Security > Administrative Tools, and then double-click Services to check if WIA (Windows Image Acquisition) is running or in started state.

    Windows XP:

    From the Start menu, click Control Panel > Performance and Maintenance > Administrative Tools, then double-click Services.

  • There may be interference with other drivers; delete unnecessary drivers.
  • Your application may not properly comply with TWAIN. Scan using another application.
203 There is not enough free disk space to complete the scan.
Scanner driver will be closed.
  • Delete unnecessary files on the hard disk and scan again.
206 The scanner is not available while in use by another application or user.
  • Exit the ScanGear in use.
207 Scanner is not selected.
Click [Scanner Selection] to select scanner.
Scanner driver will be closed.
  • With network connection, specify the scanner to use with IJ Network Scanner Selector EX.

208 IJ Network Scanner Selector cannot be found.
Reinstall scanner driver.
Scanner driver will be closed.
  • Delete MP Drivers, then reinstall MP Drivers from the Setup CD-ROM or the web page.

250 An error has occurred.
Turn the device off and then back on.
Scanner driver will be closed.

  • Exit running applications, check that there is sufficient free space on the hard disk, then scan again.
